Retrograde Planets

Planets are never actually retrograde or stationary, they just seem that way, due to optical illusion.

“Retrograde” literally means opposite or reverse, so a planet in retrograde motion appears to be moving in reverse. Planets do not of course move backwards, and the apparent reverse motion is due to the elliptical orbits of the earth and planets. Regardless of the astronomy, the main point is that from where we stand, planets DO appear to move backwards from time to time so we should expect this to have some astrological affect on our lives. Generally we feel the energy of retrograde planets in a more introspective or reserved manner than usual, and there may be a karmic theme or feeling of déjà vu depending on the nature of the planet.

People who experience this feeling (déjà vu) strongest will be those who have a key planet or angle at this spot. Retrogrades give us the chance to really dig into our core issue, because we are forced to go over old ground again and again. This may get frustrating and tedious, but ultimately it is very useful, for tackling something karmic we may have been avoiding and that we have to address once and for all.

Rather than looking at retrogrades in such an inconvenience, look at them as opportunities to review the areas of your life represented by the current planet and sign energies and re-vitalize (breathe new life in to) these areas which have been depleted by recent movements. Hopefully, the energetic resources you've spent on the movement have been worth the sacrifice, but you will always have to stop and replenish at some point. Bless that time and opportunity and honor it by taking some time-out from recent movement to pull back, slow down or (possibly choose to) reverse altogether.

The energy of a retrograde planet is expressed more on an inner level. Retrograde planets cause you to stop and reconsider consequences. Viewed in karmic terms, retrograde planets indicate areas it would be beneficial to review and perhaps “re-do.”  They can indicate internal struggles regarding un- achieved goals or unfinished life lessons. Generally, natal planets in retrograde tend to internalize their influences, allowing you to work on your present scenario.
